Washington, DC is famous worldwide for the monuments and museums institutions that line the National National Mall. But the city also enjoys many cultural attractions beyond these iconic American treasures. Within just two miles of the Graham Georgetown lie some of the District’s finest under-the-radar cultural offerings. Here are our favorites:
TUDOR PLACE
Over five acres of gardens surround Tudor Place, one of Georgetown’s largest mansions. The house was built by Robert Peter, Georgetown’s first mayor, and his wife Martha Parke Custis, a granddaughter of Martha Washington. The eclectic design displays neoclassical, French romantic classical, and Federal Period influences. Complementing the house’s hodgepodge of architectural details, the expansive gardens also impresses with a Japanese Tea House and a circle garden featuring a divine collection all white shrubs.

THE KREEGER MUSEUM
The Kreeger Museum’s sculpture garden and indoor galleries are home to one of DC’s finest collections of 19th- and 20th-century art. Inside, visitors can view works by Monet, Renoir, and Picasso, while the outdoor sculpture garden is comprised of a variety of modern works including a webbed figure statue by Henry Moore entitled Standing Figure: Knife Edge, and a flailing silver masterpiece entitled Flame of Friendship by Leonardo Nierman.

THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION
Our country’s first museum devoted to modern art, the Phillips Collection carries an impressive collection of works in a 1920s townhouse near Dupont Circle. With paintings from iconic figures like el Greco, Matisse, O’Keefe, Rothko, and Van Gogh, the Phillips showcases big-name artists on a much more intimate level than the Smithsonian’s galleries. Its temporary exhibition series is also a point of local interest, bringing in works by the likes of illustrator Jacob Lawrence and mathematical photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. The quality of the art strung throughout the Phillips Collection bears testament to the fine museums one can find near the Graham Georgetown Hotel that are off the main tourist map.
