Breweries large and small have been popping up all over the DC over the past few years. So, if you’re looking for a break from sightseeing, head to one of these local spots for an IPA, lager or something new.
DC BRAU
One of the fastest growing breweries in the US, DC Brau is putting DC on the craft beer map. DC’s first packaging brewery since 1956, it’s created hometown favorites like The Public, an American IPA, and The Citizen, a Belgian Ale. These beers have won so many awards around the globe that it’s hard to keep track. Seriously, check out the awards page on their website! The brewery, located in Northeast DC, offers free tours on Saturdays and growler fills throughout the week.
3 STAR BREWING
Two best friends with a homebrew kit decided to take their hobby public and opened 3 Star Brewing in 2012. You can find 3 Star on tap at bars across the city, as well as in cans at local grocery stores. If you really want to get a taste, however, we suggest heading to the brewery in Takoma for a free tour on Saturdays at 2pm and 3pm. Take a growler of your favorite brew home after!
ATLAS BREW WORKS
This small-batch brewery in Ivy City produces artisanal beers like the District Common, which combines biscuit malt and Czech Saaz hops, making it a crisp, well-balanced lager with fruity notes. The crew at Atlas suggests pairing it with some locally harvested oysters or roast pork medallions. Head to the brewery and tasting room in Northeast Washington to check out for unique brews and insights like this. It’s open for tours throughout the weekend.
RIGHT PROPER BREWERY
If you’re looking for a full meal with your beer tasting, head to Right Proper. This trendy brewhouse and kitchen in Shaw serves up delicious bites and strong ales like the sticky sweet Thai brussel sprouts and the Haxan—a Baltic porter aged in a rum barrel. We love coming here before a performance at the Howard Theatre, or to sit on the patio in the summer. If you’re more focused on the beer itself, there is also a larger brewery in Brookland well worth checking out.
